'HEGDE' is the name of a community and the same name is owned as a surname by everyone who belongs to this community. As a clan or in the plural form these people are known as " HEGGADE". This community are the natives of Karnataka and speak their own Kannada as their mother tongue. Basically, the people are landowners and are farmers and are spread over the coasts of Karnataka, ranging from Byndoor, Kundapura and Shimoga in the north till Puttur, Kasargod and Kanhangad in the south. But, are found mostly focused around the areas of Moodabidri, Karkala, Bajagoli, Mala, Naravi, Belthangady, Hebri & Kundapura.
Hegde community have ten known Balis or (gotras) and follow the Matriarchal system in their family interaction. Uncle is treated as the head of the house and takes the prime respect in marriage functions. But, the community practices Brahmana samskara in the marriage rituals unlike the sampradaya as practiced by other tulunadu communities. The community avoids the relationship between the same Ballis of their Mothers and Fathers, i.e., both Mothers of the would-be bride and groom should not share the same Bali and similarly among the Fathers, as well. For the Community that is growing vastly in numbers and values, we need to introduce systems to keep us connected adequately, to bring in about all the required information and ease to unite with healthy relationships.
